The Georgia Dome — the former home of the Atlanta Falcons — was only 25 years old when it was demolished by the city of Atlanta.
The Falcons moved into the new Mercedes-Benz Stadium — a stunning $1.5 billion stadium with a retractable roof — to start the 2017 season. It is like nothing else ever seen in the NFL and looks from the outside like a gigantic metal origami structure.
Here is a tour of some of the stadium’s stunning features. Many of the images are from a rendering produced before the stadium was opened.
The Georgia Dome was taken down with a controlled implosion. It opened in 1992.

The Mercedes-Benz Stadium, which sits right next to the lot where the Georgia Dome once stood, is located in downtown Atlanta.
One side of the stadium is a ground-to-roof window.
The stadium has a retractable roof unlike any other, opening up like a flower and inspired by the Oculus in the Pantheon of ancient Rome.
Here’s a shot of the roof when it’s open.
And when it’s closed.
Sometimes the retractable roof is lit with different colors when it’s closed.
The gigantic window provides the fans with a cool view of Atlanta’s downtown.
The coolest feature of the stadium may be the 360-degree high-definition “halo” video board.
Here is what the videoboard looked like before a Falcons game.
There are even some unique column video screens, as well as some smaller screens located among the seats.
The Champions Lounge is a high-end bar area that opens up to the field right behind the Falcons’ bench.
The 100 Yard Bar runs the entire length of the football field and even has yard markers and hash marks.
There are other lounges that are open-air and overlook the field from above.
Here is what one of the suites looks like
Of course, the stadium is used for other events. Here is what it looks like during a concert.
It will host college basketball’s Final Four in 2020.
And here is what the stadium looks like for Atlanta’s Major League Soccer franchise, United FC.
Atlanta United won the 2018 MLS Cup in just its second season as a franchise and broke multiple MLS attendance records at Mercedes-Benz Stadium throughout its championship season.
Notice that there are panels that can be lowered to hide the upper deck for smaller crowds, giving the arena a more intimate feel. This looks a lot nicer than the tarps some stadiums use to cover empty seats.
Of course, Mercedes-Benz Stadium is at its best when it is hosting games at night.
Check out how it lights up.
Here is the full video of the stadium rendering.
